Aircraft Position Lights

Traffic can be hard to spot at night, but there is one upside to it being dark out. Aircraft position lights can help you determine which direction an airplane is moving, and they are much easier to spot at night. There are always red lights on the left, and green lights are always on the right.

Using the C172 as an example, once you turn the “NAV” lights on you will notice these lights illuminate. So no, not the strobe lights, which are white, but the NAV lights.

You can use this to help you when you are scanning for traffic, it’s easiest to spot airplanes moving quickly that contrast with the background behind them.
