Becoming overwhelmed while controlling

As a controller, it is your job to manage multiple aircraft within a specific airspace. Traffic amounts can pick up rapidly in a matter of seconds.

Even with the most thorough of plans, it can be difficult to cope with the large amounts of traffic under your control.

Controllers are susceptible to crumbling under this pressure. When overwhelmed, it’s possible for controllers to start making rash decisions and mistakes, which only fuels the fire.

When you find yourself facing this situation, your best bet is simply to look away. Despite how radical it sounds, sometimes not even the best plans can save you from this stress.

Look away, take a deep breath, and relax your muscles. Simply doing this allows your mind to recoup. When you look back at the screen, there is a fresh perspective and a fresh plan just waiting for you.
