Use Your Left and Right Downwind

December, 20, 2020 by

Tower controllers at parallel runway airports are encouraged to use the left/right downwind to their advantage even when aircraft are going to the same runway.

You don’t need to limit yourself to using one side over the other. Controllers seem to get into the habit that they must stick to one thing and can’t stray off of it. Be flexible!

In some cases this can allow you to separate faster traffic and provide better service, separating types, characteristics, or pattern size.

There’s also the scenarios where conflicts arise and you may need to use one downwind over the other to resolve it. That shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re restricted by terrain that’s okay, but you can use both sides if you need to.
